Grading

Half of a scholar’s grade will reflect the extent of his or her effort (i.e., how hard he or she tried) and the other half his or her achievement (i.e., the quality of his or her work).  Look left for a summary of the types of assignments that are effort-based vs. achievement-based, and for a break-down of a scholar’s overall grade by type of assignment.

The section below answers frequently asked questions about the types of assignments you will receive in this class:

How will homework be graded?
Homework will be assigned every night and will include a variety of skills contained to no more than 20 questions. Each assignment will hold you accountable for areas in math you should have mastered by now and may contain challenging questions to preview skills we have not developed fully.  You will self-assess and grade your own assignments based on accuracy (How many questions out of 20 did you get right?) and effort (Did I show all of my work for every question?). The Mathquez promises to get an answer key of most homework assignments in your hands on a daily basis.

How will classwork be graded?
Classwork will be collected everyday and graded at random, at least once per week.  As with homework, it will be graded on the basis of the amount of care and effort shown.

How will participation be graded?
Students will be assessed on their participation every day.  Scholars are expected to volunteer answers (i.e. “cold calls” do not count) twice per day in addition to keeping their playbook neat and complete.  Students who are regularly meeting this expectation will earn 100% in participation.

How often will scholars take quizzes and tests?
Students can expect a weekly quiz every Thursday or Friday, tests at the end of every unit, and 4 Interim Assessments throughout the year.
